German at MLS

Why learn German?

You might already have one or several reasons to learn German. Maybe you would like to communicate with friends and relatives or for work purposes. Maybe you like travelling to Germany, Austria, Switzerland or Liechtenstein. Maybe you even want to move to a German speaking country. Even if none of these reasons apply to you there are still many other reasons to learn German.

German has the biggest number of native speakers of any language in Europe, approximately 120 million people. Most of them live in Germany, the most populous country in Europe. Others live in Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein where German is an official language. It is also widely used in Eastern European countries.

German speaking countries have a rich cultural heritage. Germany itself is often referred to as “Das Land der Dichter und Denker” – “The land of poets and thinkers” such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Franz Kafka and Thomas Mann. German speakers have also had considerable influence in the world of classical music (think of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and others), in the world of art and architecture (the Bauhaus movement, Dürer, Nolde and others spring to mind) and in the world of philosophy and sciences (Kant, Nietzsche, Freud and others). Scientists from the three major German-speaking countries have won dozens of Nobel prizes in physics, chemistry, and medicine.

But German is not just a language of the past. Even today 1 in 10 books in the world is published in German; a lot of these titles are scientific and scholarly works as German is the second most used scientific language after English. Only a minority of these books gets translated into other languages, which makes knowledge of German the only means of access to this body of writing.

Meet the teacher

Guten Tag! Ich heiße Nina Hofmann und komme aus Deutschland. Hello! My name is Nina Hofmann and come from Germany. I love teaching German here at the Modern Language School. I can cater for all age groups and levels and have had experience teaching children and adults since coming to the UK in 2006 as a Foreign Language Assistant and gaining Qualified Teacher Status in 2008. I am enthusiastic about languages in general and will help you build your German language skills by drawing on your previous knowledge or by introducing the language from scratch in an engaging and fun way. (Get in touch with the school to find out more about current courses. I am looking forward to meeting you.)
