Here is this week’s comments from Keiko about her Japanese class of this week at the Modern Language School:

Now we can make an introduction of our own familiy.

Talking about family in Japanese:

A trick in East Asian languages like Japanese is that we refer to insiders and outsiders in different ways.

In the case of families, insiders include our own family members, and outsiders the family members of others.

For example, someone’s own mother should be referred to as “haha”‘, while someone else’s mother is “okaasan”.
